Gun Safety Education Backpack

Back to school, back to safety.

A firearm safety refresh for parents to start the school year off right.

Healthy kids are curious. It is better to create a safe environment than to rely on educating children not to touch guns. Studies have shown that young children are just as likely as older children to know the location of guns in the home and have reported handling a household gun without their parents’ knowledge. With that in mind, we created a resource for all caregivers with information and best practices about safe storage. Here you’ll find many tools and resources from several of our our partners organizations.

  • Safety is always an adult responsibility. The Be SMART campaign has five tenets of responsible gun storage.
  • Easy access to guns can lead to tragic consequences for children. Learn about the ASK (Asking Saves Kids) Campaign and tips for starting the conversation about firearms with other parents.
  • Safe Storage Matters. Fifteen states have strong child access prevention laws. See if your state makes the list.
  • Want to empower your student? Learn about the Speak Up campaign. Students can safely and anonymously report suspected threats 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by calling 1-866-SPEAK-UP.

Securing guns is the single most important thing we can do as individuals to reduce unintentional gun deaths. Remember, you can never rely on curious children to keep themselves safe.
